Kea, the still-secret island of the Cyclades

A little piece of history

The island of Kea lies near Cape Sounion, southeast of Athens, in the Cyclades. The island made headlines in 1916, when the liner Britannic, a hospital ship belonging to the British army during the First World War, ran aground off its coast on November 21 of that year. Its wreckage, still visible today, is part of the island’s history. Reaching depths of over 100 meters, this is one of the largest wrecks to be found in the Mediterranean.

Because the island of Kea is not connected to the large port of Piraeus in Athens, it is still untouched by mass tourism.
