Welcome to Marseille – A Host City for the Games
Marseille, the picturesque port city on the Mediterranean coast of France, is proud to be one of the host cities
for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024. This historic city from Provence will come alive with world-class sporting
events, showcasing the spirit of competition and unity.
Stade Vélodrome: A Sporting Icon
Located in the heart of Marseille, Stade Vélodrome is France’s second-largest stadium and home to Olympique de Marseille. Built in 1937 and recently renovated in 2014, it boasts a modern look with a new roof and increased capacity. The stadium also embraces eco-friendly practices, recovering heat from a nearby wastewater treatment plant and reusing rainwater. Over the years, it has hosted major events like the Football World Cups in 1938 and 1998, Euro Football Championships in 1984 and 2016, and the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Stade Vélodrome continues to be a cultural hub, hosting international concerts by artists such as the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Céline Dion, and AC/DC.
The brand new Marina
Marseille, known for its strong maritime ties, is the ideal location for sailing events during the Paris 2024 Games. The city’s expertise in hosting boat-related competitions makes it a natural choice. Roucas-Blanc Marina, a departure point for boats, will be adapted for Olympic-scale competition. Plans include 7,000 sqm of new buildings, reorganizing 17,000 sqm of outdoor spaces, and transforming the basin into a world-class venue.
The site’s strategic position along Marseille’s La Corniche offers close-up views for thousands of spectators. Ideal water conditions, with steady winds and a well-oriented coastal configuration, ensure optimal conditions for competitors. Marseille will also host Olympic football matches at Stade Vélodrome, with a capacity of 12,262, including 2,262 seated and 10,000 standing spectators.
