Tak a walk in Lucca
Home » Blog » Activities
Lucca, in Tuscany, is famous for its varied exquisite landscapes. The medieval town of Lucca itself is well worth a visit. It’s a particularly popular destination for lovers of Italy. Indeed, this city is rich in history and tradition, as its beautiful heritage testifies. It has preserved the traces of its important trading activity and is also on a medieval pilgrimage route. You can explore the town on foot or by bike. Here are some of the places not to be missed in this famous Tuscan town.
THE RAMPARTS
Lucca is encircled with murals. The ramparts date back to the 16th century and are remarkably well-preserved. Entering through one of the six gates, you can stroll along the shady 4 km Passeggiata delle Mura path, admiring the view. This walk is particularly pleasant when the weather’s not too hot, as on mild spring days, or summer mornings and evenings.
THE OLD TOWN
Near the ramparts, continue your stroll through the old town. Its narrow streets also invite you to take a stroll. The promenade is ideal for pedaling or simply walking, taking little detours as you please. Your feet will take you to Piazza del Giglio or Piazza Napoleone. Follow Via Beccheria to discover the Piazza and Church of San Michele, and take the alley opposite the church to reach the birthplace of opera composer Giacomo Puccini.
THE AUDITORIUM SQUARE OR PIAZZA DELL’ANFITEATRO
When strolling through Lucca’s historic center, follow the charming Via Fillungo, for example, and you’ll come to the Piazza dell’anfiteatro. This is the perfect place to take a short break, enjoy an ice-cream or cappuccino, or sample local specialties accompanied by an Italian wine for an aperitivo. As you continue your stroll, you’ll come across many magnificent palace facades, pretty buildings and so many churches.
THE GUINIGI TOWER
If you like to take in the sights, the city’s iconic towers, particularly the Torre Guinigi, are a must-see. At the end of some 230 steps, you’ll enjoy a superb 360° panorama of the entire city, which you can capture with your camera. You can also relax for a while in the shade of the trees planted at the very top of the tower. Another way to continue your stroll is along the canal that runs through the city.
TORRIGIANI AND MANSI VILLA
Remarkable for their sumptuous English-style gardens, Villa Torrigiani and Villa Mansi are among Lucca’s star attractions. Intoxicated by the sweet scent of flowers, you will enjoy a stroll through their grounds, as well as visits to the villas with their superb rooms and paintings.
