What to see in Kea Island?

Although the island of Kea is less frequented by international visitors than the other Cycladic islands, it does not lack interest. A vacation on this Greek island will allow you to discover ancient treasures, recharge your batteries, enjoy your favorite water sports and learn more about the Titanic of Kea.

Discover the many attractions of Kea Island

Explore the ancient site of Karthea, destroyed by an earthquake in the 4th century. Along with the island’s other city-states, Koréssia, Piiéssa and Ioulis, this ancient city was, according to Greek mythology, the home of the Nymphs. It is the most important of these large cities dating back to the Archaic period, and on the site you can still see the ruins of the Doric temple of Apollo Pythian, built in 530 B.C., the ramparts of the ancient city and the propylon of the temple once dedicated to the goddess Athena. From here, walk along the ancient Vathypotamos path and take a dip in the waters of Polès beach.

As vacations are often synonymous with a stay with your feet in the water, you’re in for a treat on this Greek island. It offers superb sandy beaches with pine, tamarisk and eucalyptus trees, and crystal-clear waters where you can enjoy idleness, swimming, windsurfing, pedal-boating and all kinds of water sports. Kea’s most popular beaches and coves are Vourkari, Yialiskari, Orkos, Spathi, Pissès, Koundouros and Korrisia.

The beautiful island of Kea also hides other treasures, such as towers, prehistoric cities and hiking trails. For example, you can visit part of the remains of the Panachras tower or catch a glimpse of the wall of the best-preserved five-storey tower of Agia Marina. Both date back to the Hellenistic period.

Thanks to its mountainous landscape, you can also visit the whole island by following signposted hiking trails, 65% of which are paved. These walks will take you from the desert-like setting of the coasts to the lush greenery of the hinterland, with its many fruit trees.

Kea’s seabed also conceals the wreck of the English liner Britannic, which sank off the island in 1916. Today, it is considered one of the most important wrecks in the Mediterranean Sea. For the record, the ship was built by the same shipyard as the Titanic.
