Where will the spectators be?

The ceremony in numbers

At least 600,000 spectators, Over 1’000’000’000 viewers !

Breaking codes, revolutionizing the Games, and making them accessible to the widest audience: that’s the challenge of Paris 2024. Thanks to the concerted efforts of Paris 2024, the city of Paris, the State, the IOC, and the CNOSF, the ceremony is reinvented in the heart of the playing field that will become that of the athletes the next day, the City of Light, for the greatest sports celebration in the heart of Paris.

The Olympic Seine

Departing from its historic setting, the opening ceremony of Paris 2024 marks a departure from previous editions of the Games. In 2024, the ceremony promises to be bold, original, and unique, marking a historic milestone in Olympic history.

An Out-of-Stadium Ceremony

For the first time in Summer Olympic Games history, a ceremony will take place outside a stadium. Paris 2024 breaks the norms of sports competition by bringing sports into the city, and the same goes for the opening ceremony. The city will become the living backdrop for an exceptional moment, with various scenes of a total spectacle featuring the monuments, bridges, and cultural establishments along the Seine.

A Ceremony on a River

In a form unprecedented in Olympic history, the parade will take place on dedicated vessels for national delegations, equipped with cameras to bring viewers as close as possible to the athletes. Navigating from east to west through Paris, the 10,500 athletes will stroll through the playing field that will enhance their performances over sixteen days. Stretching six kilometers, the journey will conclude in front of the Trocadéro, where the final performances and protocol ceremonies will take place.

A Ceremony with Free Access

A ceremony open to the widest audience and free of charge, this is a major first. On the upper banks, spectators will enjoy free access. On the lower banks, between the Austerlitz Bridge and the Iéna Bridge, spectators will have paid tickets. Thanks to this setup, at least 600,000 spectators are invited to the celebration on the banks and bridges of Paris, ten times more than in an Olympic stadium configuration. 80 giant screens and sound systems will allow everyone to enjoy the magical atmosphere that this extraordinary spectacle will broadcast throughout the capital. The opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Games will become the largest Olympic ceremony in the world. Parisians, people from Seine-Saint-Denis, Île-de-France residents, spectators from all over France and the world, everyone is invited to the celebration.

A Ceremony by and for Athletes

Athletes will be at the heart of the show. By placing the parade of delegations at the beginning, Paris 2024 breaks traditional conventions. From the introduction and throughout the ceremony, they will be intertwined with artistic performances, illustrating Paris 2024’s commitment to creating Games for and by the athletes.

The fluvial spectacle will follow the course of the Seine, from east to west over 6 km. It will start from the Austerlitz Bridge, in front of the Jardin des Plantes, circumnavigate the two Parisian islands of Saint Louis and the Cité, pass under eight to ten bridges and footbridges, the stages of the shows that will punctuate the journey. On board their vessels, athletes will glimpse some of the official Games sites such as Place de la Concorde, Esplanade des Invalides, the Grand Palais, and finally the Iéna Bridge, where the procession will conclude in front of the Trocadéro and its official stand for a grand finale blending protocol and spectacle.
