Puccini festival
The Festival Puccini is Italy‘s annual rendezvous for lovers of culture, especially theater and opera. This prestigious event, dedicated to and named after the famous Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, takes place every summer in the province of Lucca, Tuscany. It is one of Italy’s greatest classical music gatherings. Theatrical performances and operas take place throughout July and August, attracting Italian high society and international enthusiasts. Some 40,000 spectators attend. The Puccini Festival is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in Italian culture and discover the most remarkable works of this great composer, including La Bohème, Tosca and Madame Butterfly.
A MAGIC NIGHT UNDER THE STARS
The Festival Puccini is an open-air opera show presented in an exceptional setting on the shores of Lake Massacciuccoli, in the town of Torre del Lago, between Lucca and the sea. Seduced by the unique beauty and magic of the village lake, composer Giacomo Puccini decided to spend most of his life here. He settled in the village, first by the lake and then, at the end of the 19th century, about 2km from the beaches of Versilia. Inspired by the splendor of the setting, he created such major works as Manon Lescaut and La Bohème, first performed in 1893 and 1896 respectively. Later works included La Tosca, composed in 1900, and Madame Butterfly in 1904. Before he died, the composer wrote to one of his friends, expressing a special wish that at least one of his operas should one day be performed on the shores of Torre del Lago lake. In 1930, the Puccini Theatre was created in his memory on the shores of Lake Massacciuccoli. Today, it hosts the distinguished annual Puccini Classical Music Festival. The Italian composer, his wife and their son are laid to rest in a small chapel in their first lakeside home.
