The Corsica Sardinia regatta
The 2 most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean can be linked by the most adventurous and experienced sailors. Whether on a regatta or a cruise, stopovers on the Corsican and Sardinian islets are within the reach of those with a taste for adventure. A one-week sea voyage takes you from the south of Corsica to the north of Sardinia. Leaving from Bonifacio, a cruise in total comfort aboard a catamaran is ideal for discovering the famous strait between Corsica and Sardinia: the Bouches de Bonifacio. During this expedition, you can explore Petit Sperone, the Lavezzi islands and Campomoro in Corsica, and Madallena, Porto Cervo and Tavollara in the Sardinian archipelago. Once this region has been explored, regattas allow you to rediscover it, but in a competitive spirit and with guaranteed thrills.
WHAT IS A REGATTA?
A regatta is a nautical competition in which boats compete for a speed record. In 1680, regatta meant the boat races held on the Grand Canal in Venice. In 1870, it took on a broader meaning, designating a boat race under sail or oar. A variety of sailing boats can be used for racing, including dinghies, windsurfers and sport catamarans. It’s important to note that different boats can be used in inter-series regattas. However, these must be from the same class, or from the same series in a one-design regatta. A regatta can be sailed single-handed, in pairs or with a crew. The “banana course” is the most popular regatta course. There are, however, other less popular courses, such as the “coastal”, the “trapeze” or the “Olympic” course. If the competition takes place on the high seas over a long distance, it is no longer a regatta, but an ocean race.
HOW DOES THE CORSICA SARDINIA REGATTA WORK?
As far as the Corsica Sardinia regatta is concerned, the Inter-Islands Challenge is a real crossroads for windsurfers and kitesurfers from all over the world. It’s an international competition, part of the French championship for windsurfing raids and long distances. Over a distance of 11 nautical miles, the race takes place between Bonifacio in Corsica and Santa Teresa in Sardinia. It’s the perfect opportunity for sailors to tackle the dangerous Bouches de Bonifacio. If you’re looking for accommodation for this regatta, rent a villa in Porto Vecchio for an unforgettable stay. If you’re a keen golfer and would like to enjoy a peaceful stay, this three-level villa will be perfect for you.
