A day in Noto

On your next visit to Sicily, don’t forget to head down to the south-eastern tip of the island to discover the beautiful town of Noto. With its distinctive Baroque style, Noto is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Sicily and Italy.
Discover Noto in a single day
The city of Noto was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693 and rebuilt by architects Giuseppe Lanza, Vincenzo Sinatra and Rosario Gagliardi 15 km from the site of the disaster. The architects responsible for its reconstruction favored a uniquely Baroque style, making it a homogeneous and coherent city in terms of its buildings. Today, the town’s original beauty makes it a must-visit. Its Roman Baroque architecture has earned this city of art a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage List as a testimony to its history. In the old town, you can still see a fountain, the remains of houses and a church. In the new town, you’ll find famous buildings such as the cathedral, the Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata and the church of San Domenico. Stop off at the beautiful religious building that is St. Nicholas Cathedral. Take time to admire the exterior façade before entering to discover the interior. The Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata, meanwhile, is a building that attracts many visitors with its whimsical facade. Its shelves in the shape of horses, lions, mermaids and cherubs, carefully furnished rooms, magnificent ceramics, spacious ballroom and charming game room make it a place to put on your list of monuments to visit in Noto. Nearby, the Oasi Faunistica nature reserve is another not-to-be-missed spot. This exceptional site offers a wilderness where golden beaches, birds and salt lakes come together in perfect harmony.
