Cavallo, billionaire’s island
Cavallo Island is a well-known destination for luxury holidaymakers. It is one of the islands making up the Lavezzi archipelago, in the extreme south of Corsica, 2 km off Bonifacio. It is the largest and only inhabited island in the archipelago. Cavallo’s particularity lies in its dreamy landscapes, a blend of scrubland, granite and immaculate sand that is unique in the world. Its other distinctive feature is that it is mainly occupied by luxurious private residences. In fact, it’s home to some of the most exclusive apartments and prestigious properties in the world, frequented by the jet-set, the stars and the wealthiest families in Italy and beyond. That’s why it’s known as the island of billionaires. Quite simply, it’s a paradise for top-of-the-range vacations, and is considered the most exclusive in the Mediterranean.
A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The first traces of human occupation on the island of Cavallo date back to the Neolithic period, although the island remained uninhabited for millennia. In Roman times, the Romans had their prisoners quarry the granite to build their monuments. But the island was surrounded by deep waters, making it impossible for the prisoners to escape. Its exceptional beauty and sometimes deadly traps have earned it the nickname of the “Cursed Siren”. It was in these waters that the vessel Semillante sank, carrying 600 French soldiers en route to the Crimea. Their graves can still be seen today in the Lavezzi cemeteries. It is said that the cries of the seagulls are those of their souls, still unable to find peace.
AN OASIS LOST IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA
Nowadays, the access to the Cavallo Island is controlled. It’s a world apart, protected and prized by jet-setters. In the heart of this magical environment, on its idyllic beaches, there are no crowds to disrupt your vacation. Traffic is reserved for electric cars and bicycles. And because the Isle of Billionaires must remain an oasis for essentially ecological reasons, only a privileged few can afford to vacation on the island. Like an Eden in the middle of the Mediterranean, it will reveal its charms to you when you dock on these shores.
